Prep softball: Newton County headed to state finals

Newton County (31-4) turned 26 hits in 31 runs as the Lady Cougars defeated Lawrence County in a decisive Game 3 Tuesday night to advance to the MHSAA Class II slow-pitch softball championships. The Lady Cougars will face the winner of the Amory-South Pontotoc series.

Shelby Anderson’s five hits in five plate appearances in Game 3 led all Newton County batters. Anderson, who also hit a home run in the contest, finished with five RBIs and five runs. Lorren Ivey bashed two home runs and had a game-high nine RBIs to go with four hits and four runs. Landree Amis hit a home run and tallied four hits in Game 3. Amis also totaled four RBIs and five runs.
Brittany Thomas contributed three hits, and Lizzy Hollingsworth, Karyle Tolbird, Lanie Phillips and Natalie Lampton pitched in with two hits apiece.
After dropping Game 1 to Lawrence County by a score of 14-11, Newton County earned a 22-10 Game 2 win.
