State Games Roundup: Lauderdale, Neshoba County volleyball teams grab medals

Two swimmers from Collinsville and Philadelphia combined to capture 10 medals in the State Games of Mississippi Masters Swimming event on Saturday in Meridian. The competition was held at the Damon Fitness Center on the Meridian Community College campus.

Collinsville’s Maureen Burnside competed in the Women’s 55-59 age group, taking five Gold Medals. Burnside swam the 100 Meter Freestyle in 1:59.26, the 50 Meter backstroke in 1:03.33, and the 400 Meter Freestyle in 9:23.29 to set three new State Games records. She also took Gold medals in the 50 Meter breast stroke at 1:17.06 and the 50 Meter Freestyle at 54.16.
Philadelphia’s Hardy Allen, swimming in the Men’s 60-64 age group, broke three State Games records, taking Gold in the 50 Meter Freestyle at 37.78, the 100 Meter IM at 1:49.14, and the 200 Meter Freestyle at 3:15.38. Hardy earned a Gold medal in the 50 Meter Breast stroke at 46.91 and a Silver medal in the 50 Meter backstroke with a time of 53:54.
The Masters Swimming event was sponsored by A&B Electric Company of Meridian.
Collinsville, Philadelphia swimmers dominate
Teams from Lauderdale and Neshoba Counties brought home medals from the 2010 State Games of Mississippi 4-Man Volleyball competition on Saturday. The event was held at John Moss Field in Meridian as one of 29 sports in the 19th Annual State Games of Mississippi.
Bringing home Gold in the Youth Division was “Just Bring It,” made up of Nicholas Dixon of Carthage and Philadelphia’s Michael Jackson, Jr., Laettner Johnson, and Kameron Thomas. The Silver Medal in the same Division went to Meridian’s “I’m Good With Anything,” consisting of Scott Gray, Jr., Ian Turner, Brittany Wansley, Mike Kober, and Natalie Harman.

In the Open C Division, Choctaw’s “Hot Shots” earned the Gold Medal. Team members were Cynthia Jones, Saron Thames, Elaine Fielder, Jenna Anderson, Clarissa Stewart, and Shelvie Dixon. The Bronze medal went to “Barefeet,” made up of Brittnay Turner, Morgan Ross, and Lauren Harman from Meridian and Sarah Burns and Leah Burns from Collinsville.
Winning the Gold medal in the Men’s B Division was “Team 2010,” consisting of Chuck Dooley, Colton Dooley, and Jeffrey Rhett of Meridian and Hester Allen of Choctaw. The Bronze medal in the Men’s B Division went to Philadelphia’s “Players.” Marco Thomas, Mike McMillan, Julius Billy, and Franshekia Tubby composed the team.
The “Disciples” took the Bronze in the Men’s A Division. Meridian’s Scott Gray and Ken Turner teamed up with Bert Martin of Tupelo and Dr. Kevin Jones of Collinsville in the competition.
The 4-Man Volleyball competition was sponsored by Mitchell Companies of Meridian.
