Area Roundup: Lady War Eagles capture Class 4A South State crown

WAYNESBORO — The Wayne County Lady War Eagles defeated the Brookhaven Lady Panthers, 49-37, here Saturday night in the championship game of the South State 4A Tournament.

Wayne County will now play at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Mississippi Coliseum against the winner of Monday’s game between Northeast Jones/Greenwood/Rosa Fort.

The Lady War Eagles led 22-9 after the first quarter, 31-22 at halftime and 39-30 after three quarters. Domaneshia Chambers hit a shot at the buzzer to put Wayne County up by nine going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady War Eagles did not score until 2:30 was left when Tamara Reed made three of four free throws after a technical foul on Brookhaven.

Shameka Russell and Chambers had 18 each for Wayne County, 30-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state by Associated Press.

Nikki Byrd scored 17 for Brookhaven, 21-15. The Lady Panthers will play Monday at 8:30 p.m. vs. the winner of the Callaway/Indianola Gentry game.

The Lady Tigers led 18-8 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime and 55-26 after three quarters in winning the consolation game.

Ebonie Jefferson led NEJ, 30-7, with 17 points. Kim Lewis added 14, Valerie Clayton had 12 and Consuela Tucker 10 for the Lady Tigers. Northeast Jones meets the loser of Saturday night’s North State 4A title game between Rosa Fort and Greenwood at 1 p.m. Monday in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

Tahera Taylor and Aimee Batol had 6 each for Long Beach.

Hinds AHS 71

Bay Springs 55

Trailing by three points heading into the final quarter, Hinds AHS scored 36 points to defeat Bay Springs in South State class 2A boys championship game that was played at Kemper High School.

Jacorey Wright scored 20 points to lead Hinds AHS, while Joseph White added 16. Regis Huddleston scored 27 to pace Bay Springs.

Hinds AHS improves to 30-4 with the win.

Newton County picked up its third win of the season as the Cougars rolled over Louisville.

Jared Cavenaugh was the winning pitcher as he improved to 2-0 on the season. Cavenaugh helped his cause at the plate as he hit three singles and accounted for three RBIs.

Josh Pender added a home run and a double for the Cougars, while Robert Westbrook added two doubles and a single. Drew Wilson hit two singles and two doubles.
