- SubmittedA resident at the Bedford Care Center iin Petal uses the “It’s Never 2 Late,” or the iN2L program. The program was recently introduced at Bedford's Newton center to help residents use technology to reach beyond their facility.
An assisted living center in Newton plans to introduce a new way to keep seniors and those with disabilities involved with technology.
The Bedford Care Center of Newton will unveil “It’s Never 2 Late,” or the iN2L program to the public on Thursday, Jan. 31.
The iN2L program specializes in helping people develop a deeper relationship with technology through an easy to use touch screen system that utilizes large icons and pictures.
Residents can use the iN2L to make video calls on Skype, send messages, access music, art, news and television, and the features are subscription based so there’s fresh content every month.
The program also is a resource for spiritual growth and mental stimulation.
“I love the games, puzzles, music and devotions,” Janice Valentine said. “It has been a blessing to me and everyone that lives here with me. I want to get one to keep in my room!”
The new program came as a result of a $380,000 Civil Money Penalties Grant from the Center for Medicaid and Medicaid Services, or CMS.
Data is sent to the CMS quarterly, with examples of how the machines are helping residents.
“They will give you the money but you have to prove what you’re doing with the equipment helps,” said Training and Development Coordinator Angela Barnett.
The system has been utilized for more than a month and has already shown many benefits.
“In just the last month and a half people who were not getting out of their wheelchairs are getting up and dancing to music,” Barnett said. “They’re talking on Skype to their families across the country.”
“One man that would not come out of his room at all has become a premier DJ,” she added. There are two iN2L machines that will be open for use during the party on Thursday.
The event will start and 6 p.m. and go on until about 8 p.m.
Staff will give a brief demonstration of how the machines work and the success stories associated with the devices. Resident families and the general public will be able to experience what the devices are all about.
Residents, however, are already raving about the system.
“The fellowship and interaction with other residents has been fun and very enjoyable,” Roy Burt said. “I look forward to learning more about the system and being more involved and getting more residents involved.”
“It challenges me and I like to see everyone involved,” James Russell said. “My favorite is Family Feud. I think it would be a great idea for us to go on the real show.”
The Bedford Care Center is located at 1009 S. Main St., Newton and food will be served.
