A 42-year-old man is in custody and expected to be formally charged Tuesday in the shooting death of two teenagers, one fatally, Friday night in Newton County.

Johnnel Jones, of Newton County, has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder, Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said.

Deputies responded to the shooting on Little Rock Decatur Road in Newton County between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday and found two teens had been shot, Knight said. A 17-year-old was shot three times, and was dead on the scene, Knight said. A 13-year-old was shot once, was taken to a hospital in Jackson and is expected to survive, Knight said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

“It is a sad situation, two families are being ruined because of this,” Knight said.
