Welty, one of Mississippi’s most commended authors, had the first exhibition of her photographs in a gallery in New York City a few months before her first story was published in 1936. Although writing would bring her much acknowledgment, her photographs have been critically acclaimed, as well.

This definitive book of her photographs, published by University Press of Mississippi, contains 252 images, many documenting the people and places of Mississippi during the1930s. Others detail her travels in New York City, New Orleans, South Carolina, Mexico, and Europe—from the 1930s through the 1950s.

The book features a new foreword by Mississippi native Natasha Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and two-term Poet Laureate of the United States. The original foreword by the late Reynolds Price — poet, novelist, and Welty friend — is also included.

“Photographs” includes 16 images not published in the first book. All of the photos were digitally scanned from the original negatives and authentic prints, restoring them to their original beauty. The book is again available in hardback for the first time in 30 years.

The commemoration, which will be held on the 30th anniversary of the original publication date and Eudora’s 110th birthday, will include a program with brief remarks and the screening of two special video clips about the book. The occasion is sponsored by the Eudora Welty Foundation and Bookfriends of the University Press of Mississippi.

In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be held in the Craig H. Neilsen Auditorium of the Two Mississippi Museums, 222 North Street, Jackson, MS 39201. For more information, call 601-353-7762.
