Deputies responded to the shooting on Little Rock Decatur Road between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight. One of the teens, a 17-year-old was shot three times, and was dead at the scene, Knight said. A 13-year-old was shot once, was taken to a hospital in Jackson and is expected to survive, Knight said.

During his initial appearance Tuesday, Jones, 42, asked to be released, saying he wasn’t a flight risk and needed to take care of his grandmother.

Newton County Justice Court Judge Scott Round denied Jones’ request, saying he understood his desire to help his grandmother, but due to the nature of the crime, Jones will remain in jail.

A grand jury could hear the case as soon as May.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
