The Philanthropic Educational Organization Chapter V will host a Bridge Marathon Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Holy Cross Catholic Church fellowship hall in Philadelphia.
For the third year, P.E.O. Chapter V has held a bridge marathon tournament fundraiser in Philadelphia. Holy Cross Catholic Church generously allowed the use of its fellowship hall for this worthy cause. Women from Newton, Meridian, Louisville and Philadelphia have attended the event.

The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and play will begin at 10 a.m. The tickets are $25 and can be purchased by contacting Joyce Dansby at 601-650-6599. There will be a lunch served, bridge cards and items for sale, a silent auction, and a lot of fun. Many area businesses have donated gifts.
This bridge tournament is for raising funds to support women of all ages, at all levels of school and with various financial needs. Mississippi sisters gave around $38,000 to the international project system but Mississippi students received back more than $104,000 in the 2015-16 year. Chapter V, Meridian consists of women from both Meridian and Philadelphia areas.
P.E.O. is always looking for women that need assistance with their education and for women interested in helping promote women’s education. If either applies to you, please email Joyce Dansby at joycedms@bellsouth.net with your questions or call 601-650-6599.

Library celebrates sign-up month
The Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library began September with National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Library cards are free to those living and working in Meridian and Lauderdale County. The library has approximately 1,048 eBooks, 40 eMagazines and 2,687 audiobooks from which patrons can choose. These items for adults and children can be checked out via computer or mobile device and viewed anywhere, anytime. Another advantage: You don’t have to worry about it being late.
In October, the library has added a Fall Fest that will take place during fall break when schools are out. There will be free hotdogs, games, and pumpkin-related activities. It is a free event.
An online calendar can be found at www.meridian.lib.ms.us. New to the library website is the ability to join an email list. Monthly emails include a calendar of upcoming events. New, also, is a link for educational resources. The library has compiled a list of links for students in grades K-12th grade that will help them advance in their studies.
