Former Kemper County receiver DJ Clayton announced his intentions to transfer from Jackson State to East Mississippi Community College.

Premier Preps of East Mississippi 2016 offensive football player of the year DJ Clayton recently announced his transfer from Jackson State University to East Mississippi Community College.

Clayton, a wide receiver, amassed 1,931 yards and scored 30 receiving touchdowns last season to help lead Kemper County to a 15-1 season and a MHSAA Class 3A state title.

Clayton received a scholarship to Jackson State and arrived on campus May 29. Over the past month, however, he and his family discussed the option of transferring to EMCC. He returned home Wednesday.

“My family and I just decided it was best for me to transfer to EMCC,” Clayton said. “If I was going to go to any JuCo, I wanted it to be Scooba because it’s my hometown. I know they’re an elite program, and I know there’s a lot of exposure there. I thought it was the right platform.”

Clayton plans to enroll at EMCC on July 5 and expects to compete for playing time next season.

“I’m excited to put on again for my hometown, and just give everyone hope,” he said. “I’m excited to let Scooba open more doors for me and see where I can take my talents.”
