Warner S. Currie

Memorial services for Warner Settle Currie will be held Monday, at 11 a.m., at Northside United Methodist Church. Prior to the service, the family will receive family and friends at 10 a.m. A reception will follow the memorial service in the Faith and Arts Center.
Mr. Currie died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010. He was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Meridian to James Hector Currie Jr. and Rachel Settle Currie. Mr. Currie attended the University of Mississippi and Georgia Institute of Technology and received his law degree from Emory University School of Law. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 99th Infantry Division. He attained the rank of Major in field artillery and was decorated with the Bronze Star and four Battle Stars for service in the European theatre of operations.
Admitted to the bar in 1949, he was a senior partner at the firm of Swift, Currie, McGhee and Hiers, practicing general liability and products liability litigation and labor relations law. He was a member of the Atlanta and American Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, the Defense Research Institute and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Currie was a frequent lecturer at tort and labor seminars.
Upon retirement from private practice he served as an Adjunct Professor at Emory University School of Law. In 1991, he was named the Acting Director of the L.L.M. in Litigation Program at Emory and in 1995 was elected The Most Outstanding Professor of the Year by the Student Bar Association.
An avid golfer, Mr. Currie was a member of Peachtree Golf Club and Cherokee Town and Country Club. He additionally was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He was a member of Northside United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his loving wife of sixty-two years, Nanelle Currie; daughter, Nan Currie of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Laura Currie of Atlanta; and sister, Rachel Martin of Oxford. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Currie Spier, Bob Spier and wife, Sam, Caroline and Robert Currie; and, one great-granddaughter, Piper Spier.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hector and Rodes Currie.
