Are you interested in the possibility of finding a buried treasure? Jack Giles has written a captivating book about the buried or lost treasures right here in east central Mississippi.
I was amazed upon reading his thorough accounts of what is known about the many treasures that lie hidden in these parts. The woodlands hold much more than fauna and flora for those who are drawn to the outdoors and Giles book stirs a rare and powerful excitement that gets at the inner longings of all human beings.
Giles book, titled “Incredible Treasures Awaiting Discovery,” reveals no less than 21 sites here at our doorsteps where treasures exist according to stories passed down from generation to generation from the times when the treasures, usually gold or gold coins, were hidden.
Underfoot
The locations are familiar to everyone and my curiosity went out the roof as I read about the history of hidden treasures in my woodland haunts. Here are locations where treasures are said to be undiscovered and where Giles research offers us facts, legends and clues as to where the caches lie.
Chunky, Chunky River, Stucky Bridge, Lizelia, the Naval Air Station, Union, Lost Gap, Kemper County’s Oak Grove, Rio and Porterville, two spots near Suqualena, Hickory, King’s Road, Rogers Creek, Chickasawhay, Westgate Hills, Buckatunna and Stonewall. The treasures are for the most part hidden in woods near these locations. One story tells of the biggest treasure that exists in the area which was buried “a few miles south of Meridian.”
Even disregarding the magnetism of undiscovered fortunes, the stories of how these riches came to be buried by soldiers, outlaws, ordinary people and others are exciting and well worth reading “Incredible Treasures.”
The top treasure
The last two chapters address the obvious and compelling truth of how the greatest treasure that we can receive is the spiritual one that saves us from the forces of destruction. Here is where Giles asserts and shares his spiritual strength and the reader feels a welcome sense of hope and peace.
The Reverend Mike Boles declares the book a “masterpiece.” Paul Ott Carruth calls it a “treasure map.”
