“No one was at the home,” Eddie Ivy, the Clarke County emergency manager, said. “Because it was a very old home, once it was on fire it was incredibly hard to put out.”
Ivy said the home was a total loss and that some animals had perished in the fire.
No cause for the fire has been determined, Ivy said.
According to Visit Clarke County, the Swan-Mitts house, built by L.J. and Olive Swan, later housed prominent business and community leader Corrine “Dutch” Mason, who was married to F. W. Mitts.
The Queen Anne-style house, known as the “Hilltop House,” stood 85 Hilltop Drive.
