DEMOPOLIS, Ala. — Mark the calendar for a day filled with fun, community spirit and a feathered past as the Marengo County Historical Society invites everyone to Rooster Day on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the beautiful public square of Demopolis.
MCHS Operations Manager Kirk Brooker shared a little history behind this beloved event: “This marks the 100th anniversary of the original Rooster Bridge, first named Memorial Bridge, as it was completed in 1925, six years after the 1919 Rooster Auction.”
This day isn’t just about roosters; it’s about celebrating this unique event in Alabama’s history.
Rooster Day kicks off with the Cock’s Crow 5K and 1K Fun Run, perfect for both seasoned runners and families looking for a fun day out. And the first 50 registered runners will snag a souvenir t-shirt to remember their achievement. Additional run-shirts are available on a first-come, first-served basis while quantities last. Participants can register online at RoosterDayDemopolis.com.
After the race, runners and spectators alike can dive into the Rooster Fair in public square, where they can explore a treasure trove of handmade and handcrafted items from talented artists and crafters across the region. From striking photography, wooden gliders, unique pottery, silver jewelry, and all things honey, to delightful baked goods, every booth offers something special.
For those looking for something to eat, the food court will hit the spot, featuring a lineup of local food trucks and restaurants serving up mouthwatering BBQ, juicy burgers, crawfish, seafood, beignets and more.
Rooster Day also has a dedicated area for children, packed with crafts, games, a petting zoo and inflatables. Kids can enjoy all the fun, including the second annual Touch-A-Truck. The event is a hit with children, giving them the chance to explore cool vehicles like fire trucks and dump trucks up close.
Rooster Day is more than just a festival; it’s a tribute to the 1919 Rooster Auction that raised funds to build a bridge connecting Marengo and Sumter Counties. Can you believe a rooster was even sponsored by President Woodrow Wilson? And let’s not forget the little blue hen sponsored by Helen Keller!
Brittany Crawford, president of MCHS, said she can’t wait for this year’s event.
”I look forward to another great Rooster Day in historic downtown Demopolis,” She said. “It’s exciting to see public square filled with visitors of all ages. Rooster Day has something for everyone.”
Join the MCHS in celebrating the area’s unique heritage, talented artists, and community spirit! Funds raised during Rooster Day help support the Marengo County Historical Society’s ongoing preservation efforts.
