Community leaders and residents gathered Monday at the newly completed Frank Cochran Center in Highland Park as the Meridian-Lauderdale County Chapter of the NAACP held its 40th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast. The yearly events serves both to recognize the iconic Civil Rights leader and elect chapter officers for the upcoming year.
This year’s event held special significance as the community remembered state Rep. Charles Young Jr., who died Dec. 19, at a hospital in Jackson. A longtime supporter of the NAACP, Young was well known for his commitment to Meridian’s residents and ardent advocacy for his hometown.
