Fewer than 100 days are left until Christmas, and The Salvation Army of Meridian is preparing to meet an increase in needs this holiday season.

In a news release, the organization said that while the economy has improved slightly, thousands of Americans continue to struggle with high prices for food and housing. That struggle means more residents are turning to The Salvation Army for help.

“We have found that we are receiving more requests for assistance than ever before,” Lt. Roy Fisher, commanding officer of The Salvation Army in Meridian said. “Many people are still struggling to make ends meet.”

Last year, The Salvation Army of Meridian provided over 5,640 Christmas gifts to area children, handled 2,275 family/individual cases, and supplied food pantry and utility assistance to over 1,613 families, and the organization anticipates requests for service to increase this holiday season.

“With the public’s generosity, The Salvation Army will continue to provide help and hope to our neighbors in need,” Fisher said. “We are grateful for how the residents of southern Mississippi support us, but we need help now more than ever.”

Residents can help support The Salvation Army in its mission through a variety of ways including setting up a monthly gift, volunteering with the Red Kettle or Angel Tree campaigns or purchasing toys and clothes to go to local children in need through the annual Angel Tree program.

“Every donation stays right here in Meridian to support the local programs and services we offer,” Fisher said. “When you give, you are strengthening our community by helping your neighbors right where you live.”
