A suspect in a fatal shooting Monday morning in Meridian turned himself into authorities, police said.

The homicide Monday marked the third fatal shooting in Lauderdale County in 33 hours and the fourth in 11 days.

Around 9:45 a.m. officers received a call that a man had been shot in the back near 13th Avenue and 20th Street, Meridian Police Sgt. Dareall Thompson said.

Thompson said Metro ambulance took the man to the hospital but the man died either during transport or at the hospital.

Police interviewed witnesses at the scene and were able to get a good description of a suspect. Jemarcus Shaquille Grace, of Meridian, turned himself in and police planned to charge Grace with murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

Bond has been set at $300,000 for murder and $75,000 for possession of a firearm.

Thompson said Grace knew the victim but that investigators hadn’t determined a motive.

The shooting followed two separate shootings early Sunday morning within the county.

The first shooting occurred around 12:40 a.m. on Russell Drive near the Highway 39 overpass in Meridian. The unidentified man was lying in the middle of the road near a running vehicle. Coroner Clayton Cobler said the man died from a single gunshot wound to the head. His body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

The body was found next to a rented Chrysler 300. The vehicle’s windshield wipers were on at the time. Cobler described the victim as a black man in his 30s or 40s.

Meridian police said the man was shot in the face and the incident appears to be a robbery because of the victim’s missing wallet.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim had just left JJ’s club on Russell Drive, police said.

“This is going to be a strange case,” Cobler said Sunday morning. “There were no witnesses and rain got rid of a lot of the evidence.”

The second shooting occurred at 2 a.m. Sunday in the county on the 9200 block of Highway 495. Cobler said a man was taken to Anderson Regional Medical Center, but died at approximately 3 a.m. before getting into surgery.

Cobler said the victim’s body was also taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun identified the man as Phillip Edward Garrison Jr., a 27-year-old from the Bailey community. Calhoun said the two involved in the shooting knew each other and that no charges have been filed.

Calhoun said the case is under investigation, pending autopsy results.

Police also identified Jamarkee Jones as the man found dead in the abandoned apartments on the 1500th block of 28th Avenue Sunday, Nov. 27. Jones was the first of four fatal shooting victims in an 11-day stretch.

Jones’ body had been sent to Jackson for an autopsy after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. The cause of death was inconclusive because no gun was found on the scene, Cobler said.

“We are continuing to investigate at this time,” Thompson said.
