The Grand Jury of the August 2017 Term of the Circuit Court of Lauderdale County has recommended that the Lauderdale County Courthouse be remodeled at its current location. According to the report, filed on Aug. 24, mold issues should be addressed, the elevators need to be upgraded or replaced, the ceilings need to be repaired and the courthouse should be painted.

The grand jury also addressed the issues at the county jail. According to the report, the facility should be replaced or relocated, and if rebuilt, the new building should be “large enough so that it won’t need expansion again in a few years.”

The jail also needs to be designed to where inmates can be observed at all times.

The building has rust issues and needs a new air conditioning unit, as it is difficult to access for maintenance. There is also a lack of security in the PODs that needs to be addressed.

The grand jury said, however, that the new camera system is “good,” and the staff is “friendly and efficient.”
