Before returning to school this fall, local Boy Scout Keith Smith has managed to squeeze in one last adventure this summer.

On Sunday, Keith traveled to Texas to meet with a group of 40 Scouts from four states to attend the 21st World Scout Jamboree. Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, in the heart of England, will be the setting for the jamboree.

According John Beauregard, Scout executive of the Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts, Smith is part of a very elite group.

“Only 4,000 Scouts from the United States will attend and this number represents 300 councils,” Beauregard said. “Each council was allotted a certain number of Scouts to attend — the larger the council the more kids.”

The jamboree will be hosted by the Scout Association of the United Kingdom from July 27 through Aug. 8. It will bring together 40,000 Scouts, Ventures, leaders and staff for 12 days. “One World, One Promise” is the theme.

During the 12-day adventure, Scouts will develop friendships as well as experience personal growth, Beauregard said. Hylands Park is a large area of rolling green parkland with patches of woodland and an English country house. Key elements of the jamboree include a World Village, The Gilwell Adventure, a Global Development Village and a Community Action Day.

Keith is the son of Andy and Suzanne Smith. He attends Clarkdale High School.
