A Lauderdale County man is facing charges in the Tuesday shooting death of his wife.

Sheriff Ward Calhoun said deputies responded to a call of a woman being shot in the 9000 block of Blizzard Road around 12:34 p.m. along with Metro Ambulance.

“The caller, Joseph Stewart, who is the husband of the victim, Helen Stewart, was taken into custody at the scene,” Calhoun said.

Helen Stewart was taken to a local hospital for treatment while her husband was charged with aggravated assault and booked into Lauderdale County Detention Facility. Helen Stewart died of her injuries shortly after, Calhoun said.

Following the death, investigators consulted with the district attorney’s office and decided to upgrade Joseph Stewart’s charge to murder, Calhoun said. He is being held without bond.

“The investigation into this incident is ongoing,” he said. “Additional facts that may be discovered and all relevant information will be presented to the grand jury for their consideration.”
