East Mississippi Community College is mourning the loss of a student athlete who was killed in a vehicle accident in Clarke County Wednesday evening. 

Zquavius “Zae” Crain, 20, died around 4:49 p.m. while traveling southbound on Interstate  59 just outside of Enterprise, according to a report from the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Crain was driving a 2006 Toyota which veered off the roadway, overcorrected, hit a tree, then overturned, according to the report. 

Crain and his passengers, Keon Moore and Jeremiah Braziel, were traveling home to Gulfport for the holiday weekend, according to EMCC. Moore and Braziel both suffered injuries in the crash. 

Moore was released from the hospital Wednesday and Braziel had surgery in Jackson Wednesday, according to the school.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of rising freshman Zae Crain,” EMCC President Scott Alsobrooks said in a statement. “Please keep his family, friends, and teammates in your prayers as we grieve the loss of such an incredible young man.”

EMCC head coach Buddy Stephens said Crain’s death was as “an absolute blow to the EMCC family.”

“His death reminds us how fragile life is and to not let a day go by without holding our loved ones near,” Stephens said in a statement. “Zae was a great student, a great athlete, and everything with a smile on his face. We ask in the coming days that you keep Zae’s family in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask that you lift up Jeremiah Braziel and Keon Moore as they recover from this tragic day.”

Crain was a standout at Gulfport High School, where he played defensive back for the Admirals football team, the Sun Herald reported.
