The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations released the name of the man who died on Nov. 5 following a confrontation with an officer.
John Quincy Grady, 35, died on Nov. 5 on the 3600 block of Poplar Springs Drive around 1:45 a.m. after a shootout with a Meridian Police Department officer, according to law enforcement.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations released Grady’s name Friday, nearly two weeks after the incident. The MBI investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state.
The name of the officer hasn’t been released but Capt. John Griffith said previously the officer, a shift supervisor, had 20-23 years of experience and was placed on paid administrative leave while the MBI investigates.
According to police, the unidentified officer responded to a be-on-the-lookout report of an armed suspect driving a truck with a female passenger. Upon finding the truck on the 3600 block of Poplar Springs Drive, Grady, of Meridian, exited the car with a handgun and started firing at the officer, who returned fire and killed the suspect.
The officer was struck by two shots to the chest and another bullet grazed his leg and arm, police said. His bulletproof vest was credited for protecting him from further injury.
Police said camera malfunctions meant the officer didn’t wear a body camera and a bad angle prevented the dash camera mounted on the car from filming anything useful.
On Nov. 5, Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose said the woman and her boyfriend were riding with Grady until an argument broke out between the two men. Grady reportedly pulled a gun and told the male passenger to exit the vehicle while on Highway 39. The male passenger then called police.
MPD said a witness saw the officer standing near the truck, commanding the woman to exit the vehicle. The female passenger suffered no injuries and told police that Grady said “if he was stopped by a cop he was going to shoot him.”
According to an obituary from New Haven Memorial Funeral Home, Grady graduated from Kemper County High School and left behind his wife, son and mother.
Police said the unnamed officer is still on paid administrative leave on Friday.
