Kenneth Ryan Thomas, son of Kenny and Faye Thomas of Toomsuba and husband of Rachel Thomas of Newton, has graduated cum laude with a medical doctor’s degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.

He is a 2002 graduate of Mississippi State University, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He received the Dean’s Award 2004-2006, the 2006 Medical Scholar in Surgery, the 2006 Dr. Wally Conerly Community Service Award and the 2006 AMA Scholars Fund Award. He will begin residency training in surgery-preliminary/urology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Leigh Ellen Ammon, daughter of Jake and Sue Ammon of Collinsville, received a doctorate of medical dentistry degree from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. She received the 2006 Bradford A. Gordon Memorial Award. She is a 2001 graduate of Mississippi College and will begin advanced education in general dentistry at Idaho State University in Pocatello.

Matthew Clark Dunn, son of Leslie and Susan Dunn of Meridian, received a doctorate of medical dentistry degree from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. He is a 2002 graduate of the University of Mississippi. He will begin a general practice residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

William Brock Martin, son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert S. Justus and Mr. Mark Martin, received a doctorate of medical dentistry from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. He is a 2002 graduate of Birmingham Southern College.

• Mississippi Private Schools Association Academic Betterment Competition: Bryan Enriques and Rebecca Bator, English, seventh grade; Sarah Catherine Billups and Mary Anna Smith, English, eighth grade; Resham Rahat and Matthew Tucker, math, seventh grade; Ali McRae and Laurel Pass, math, eighth grade; Allen Massingill and Catherine Covington, Algebra 1; Robby Shine and Spencer VanZandt, Life Science; Justin Goldacker and Bo Bidgood, Earth-Space Science; John Holland and Daniel Finan, American History, eighth grade; Grace McKelvey and Trent Mosley, Mississippi History.

• Nineteen Lamar students qualified to participate in the 2005-06 Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) for seventh graders. Eleven qualifiers chose to participate in the program: Rebecca Bator, Michael Hodge, Kalab Holcomb, Logan Knight, Grace McKelvey, Trent Mosley, Victoria Poole, Resham Rahat, Robby Shine, Spencer VanZandt and Elizabeth Wilson.

Victoria Poole, Resham Rahat and Elizabeth Wilson qualified for state recognition by having scores in the top 25 percent of all students qualifying.

• Art Individual Awards: Art in The Park — Catherine Covington, first place, Ali McRae, second, Sarah Catherine Billups, third in mixed media, and Bonnie Bennett, honorable mention in the drawing category; 2006 Duck Stamp Art Competition — Catherine Covington, third place; Bonnie Bennett and Sarah Catherine Billups, honorable mention.
