The Meridian Symphony Association announces 64th season: A Symphony of Joy

The Meridian Symphony Association announced its 64th season Thursday, themed “A Symphony of Joy.” This season brings a blend of classical elegance, spirited rhythms and community-focused events, celebrating musical heritage, diversity and arts education.

The Symphony Series at MSU Riley Center will commence with Opening Night on Sept. 28, featuring the ambience and music of the Classical era with a Bach violin concerto. The popular Peppermint Pops concert follows on Dec. 7 and will feature the Symphony Chorus and the Meridian High Honor Choir, bringing festive cheer and showcasing the talents of local students. The Symphony Series will conclude May 3, 2025, with the annual Beethoven & Blue Jeans festivities celebrating Beethoven’s masterpieces and the themes of courage and triumph through the modern well-known music of today. All performances will begin at 7 p.m.

This season introduces the new Sinfonietta Series, highlighting the use of smaller orchestras, local venues and Southern artists to create an intimate and unique concert experience. The series begins with Blue Like Jazz on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience, blending classical elegance with the rhythms of Gershwin’s jazz. On March 20, 2025, at 6 p.m., the series continues at The Copeland Center with Seasons of Joy, a concert capturing the essence of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” and filling hearts with joy.

The popular UnTuxed Series offers a relaxed and engaging way to experience Meridian’s musical heritage. On Nov. 15 and 16, at 6 p.m., A Night to Shine at Soulé will celebrate Jimmie Rodgers and the women who helped him create his musical legacy. On Feb. 1, 2025, at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at The Copeland Center, Echoes of Excellence will unveil Black history through music, highlighting the contributions of Black musicians and composers.

The series will also include Mingle with the Maestro on March 21, 2025, at 6 p.m., where guests can enjoy an evening with Maestro Peter Rubardt and his wife, renowned harpsichordist, Hedi Salanki-Rubardt, at the home of Dr. Ken Staggs.

This season’s OrKIDstra! will take place at The Evangel Temple on Feb. 21, 2025, at 6 p.m. This family-friendly performance, featuring beloved childhood tales like “Peter & the Wolf,” will captivate audiences of all ages. Thanks to a generous grant from the Phil Hardin Foundation, this event will be free for everyone, ensuring that more of our community can experience the joy of the arts and live orchestral music.

The season will also see one more major change: the return of the Symphony Ball, transformed into The Gumbo Gala. Taking place on March 1, 2025, at 7 p.m. at the MSU Riley Center, this event is billed as the sassiest soirée this side of the bayou. The Gumbo Gala will combine celebration, community and joy in support of the symphony’s cultural arts programs and education initiatives.
