Neighbors: Friends of library distribute books for children

Friends of the Library Meridian-Lauderdale County representatives Linda Weimer, Karen Miller and Ann Coker presented boxes of new and slightly used children’s books to some charitable agencies around Lauderdale County to share the joy of reading and Christmas.

The books will be given to many of the families the agencies care for during the Christmas season.

Friends of the Library, established in 1971, aims to focus the public’s attention on the library and its wonderful resources and services. They love books and want to encourage that love in others.

Their next meeting is scheduled at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at the library. For more information on how you can become a Friend of the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library or help the Friends call 601-693-6771 or email friends@meridian.lib.ms.us.

Newton elementary students raise funds

Newton Municipal School District Superintendent Virginia Young presented a Christmas present of $1,500 to Anderson Regional Cancer Center for its benevolence fund to help local cancer patients.

Anderson Administrative Director Wayne Herrington received the check. The school district has raised money during October for the past four years to contribute to Anderson’s Cancer Patient Benevolence Fund. The majority of the money was raised by elementary school students, Young said.
