COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUPS: Ole Miss clinches series vs. Alabama; Southern Miss sweeps La. Tech
Grae Kessinger was 3-for-5 with a double, a walk and five RBIs, and starting pitcher Gunnar Holgund got the win for Ole Miss as the Rebels beat Alabama 12-2 Sunday in a series-clinching victory.
Holgund went five innings, giving up one run on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Austin Miller and Houston Roth combined to pitch four innings of relief, yielding just one more run to the Crimson Tide.
Tyler Keenan and Cooper Johnson had two RBIs apiece for the Rebels.
Will Freeman suffered the loss for Alabama as he gave up four runs on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work. The Alabama bullpen combined to surrender eight more runs to Ole Miss.
Keith Holcombe finished 3-for-4 with a double and had Alabama’s only two RBIs Morgan McCullough was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Ole Miss (14-6, 2-1) will host Arkansas Pine Bluff at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Alabama (17-4, 1-2) hosts Maine at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
SOUTHERN MISS 10, LOUISIANA TECH 5
Mason Strickland pitched three innings of relief to earn the win as the Golden Eagles completed the sweep of Louisiana Tech Sunday.
After starter Adam Jackson lasted just 2 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, Strickland came in and tossed three innings of one-run ball while surrendering just three hits and one walk. Several more Golden Eagle relievers got work before Ryan Och came in for the save giving up no runs on three walks and one strikeout.
Game Montenegro and Matthew Guidry both finished 2-for-5 for Southern Miss, and Guidry also hit a home run. Cole Donaldson was 2-for-3 with a double. Bryant Bowen went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, and Will McGillis finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Southern Miss (11-6, 3-0) will host Louisiana Monroe at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
