Quitman seeks first win, Philly looking to bounce back

Here’s a look at some of tonight’s prep football matchups from around East Mississippi. All games kick off at 7 p.m.

QUITMAN HIGH SCHOOL

Matchup: The Panthers (0-3) will be seeking their first win as they travel to East Central High School tonight.

Keys to the game, per head coach Steve Bynum:

•Sustained blocks

•Have a relentless defensive attack

•Stay ahead of the chains on offense

PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL

Matchup: The Tornadoes (2-1) will look to rebound from last week’s 20-9 loss to Neshoba Central High School when they travel to Louisville High School tonight.

Keys to the game, per assistant coach Steve Cheatham:

•Start fast and have something good happen early

•Win the battle up front

•Defend well in the passing game and eliminate big plays

NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL

Matchup: Newton (0-4) will play at Mendenhall High School tonight. The Tigers have struggled on both sides of the ball, giving up at least 40 points in each of their first four games while failing to score more than 18 points in any of them.

CHOCTAW CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Matchup: After beating rival Cherokee High School out of North Carolina 21-20 last week, the Warriors (1-2) turn their attention to Sumrall High School in Week 4.

•Keys to the game, per head coach Jerod Thompson:

•Get more production out of the running game

•Convert more third-down opportunities

Don’t give up big plays on defense

NEWTON COUNTY ACADEMY

Matchup: NCA (1-2) got its first win of the season last week, a 29-0 victory at Sebastopol, and will return home tonight to host Canton Academy.

KEMPER ACADEMY

Matchup: Kemper Academy (3-0) will look to continue its early season success when it plays at Delta Academy tonight. The Rams have scored at least 44 points in each of their first three games.
