Magnolia Marathon winner doubles down
Preston Breazeale doubled his distance from 2016 and still came out a winner Saturday in the Magnolia Marathon.
Breazeale, 21, of Starkville, finished the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 18 minutes, 55 seconds and was the overall champion on a windy day with a mix of sun and clouds. A former Meridian Community College runner, Breazeale won the race’s half-marathon division in 2016.
Around 220 runners competed in the marathon and half marathon. This year the course was changed to start and finish near city hall and stay within city limits. Previously the race began and ended at Northeast Recreation Park.
Sarah Bassett, of Naperville, Illinois, was the women’s champion in 4:30:57.
In the half marathon, Chip Cowsert, of Meridian, was the men’s winner in 1:25:58 and April Bonner, of Lisman, Alabama, was the women’s winner in 1:56:15.
John Long, of Louisville, Mississippi, was the only wheelchair competitor.
