Playoff softball: Union finishes Game 3 with series-clenching win

UNION — It only took 48 hours for the Union Lady Yellowjackets to complete the third game in a best-of-three series against the Crescents of Our Lady Academy with a 5-2 victory, giving Union the series win.

In a game that started Saturday and was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning due to inclement weather, Union coach Jacob Casey was a little concerned about his team after losing two players to injury Saturday. He said he wasn’t sure about how the team would respond.

“I’m so proud of the way they handled the adversity from Saturday,” Casey said.

The game started in the bottom of the fourth inning with Union up to bat with two outs. The Lady Yellowjackets had a 5-2 lead.

The Lady Crescents got Union out and, in the top of the fifth, OLA got a leadoff single which caused concern for Casey, as he felt momentum starting to shift toward the Lady Crescents. Dallas Brown, however, scooped up a grounder at her second base position, tagged out the runner going to second and threw to first for a double play that killed the momentum shift and made Casey feel much better.

“The double-play was big,” Casey said. “They got a leadoff single and were starting to get the momentum, and the double play killed it.”

Brown, a freshman, played four positions for the Lady Yellowjackets during the series and gave credit for the win to playing as a team.

“Playing multiple positions didn’t mess me up,” Brown said. “I’ve been a utility player all season. I will play any position Coach wants. I want to be a good teammate, and I want to win.”

Casey had Britli Cleveland start for Union and had Saturday’s starter, Anna Rigdon, at first base to give OLA a different look from the circle. Cleveland responded by giving up only two hits while striking out one Lady Crescent batter while allowing no runs.

Rigdon got the win for Union. Brown chipped in a single.

Union will continue its season against Lake High School today with starting time to be determined.
