Oklahoma State, Ohio State reach agreement for use of OSU moniker

Oklahoma State University and Ohio State University have reached an agreement that will allow both schools to continue to use the OSU logo.

Both schools will continue to use the logo and now can market and sell their brands nationwide.

Previously, Oklahoma State was limited to 17 states and Ohio State to 19 states, with both universities sharing branding rights in Iowa.

Ohio State University filed an application in February with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the letters “OSU” for use on clothing and apparel.

OSU responded by requesting an extension until August to respond and the two parties have come to an agreement.

Representatives from both schools said this was a fairly routine matter.

“We appreciate Ohio State’s cooperative approach as we reached a long-term agreement that satisfies the needs of both universities,” OSU spokesman Gary Shutt said in a statement to the News Press. “This agreement will avoid any confusion for our fans and the public.”
