Bay Springs sets tone early, runs past Philadelphia 38-14
PHILADELPHIA — It only took 13 seconds for the tone to be set in Bay Springs’ 38-14 win over homestanding Philadelphia High School at historic Harpole Stadium on Friday night.
With the Tornadoes holding an 8-0 lead, thanks to an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Lideatrick Griffin, Philly had the momentum. But on the ensuing kickoff Philadelphia was offsides twice and when the Tornadoes finally kicked the ball away cleanly, Bay Springs’ Derrien Lee returned it 75 yards for a score. Adrian Cole then hit Dallen Jones with a quick pass for the two-point conversion to tie the game.
“Think about that,” said first-year PHS head coach Bobby Hall. “We were offsides twice and had them stopped and then the third time was the charm. Once again, it’s not hard to look at the ball and not cross the line until it’s kicked. I’ve got to do a better job of coaching, that’s very apparent to me.”
From there things went downhill for the Tornadoes, who committed 14 first-half penalties and never could find a sustained rhythm offensively.
“I’m not sure we could have beaten anybody tonight with all of the mistakes that we made,” Hall said. “We had a lot of penalties that were totally unnecessary. General (George) Patton said ‘We have discovered the enemy and it was us.’ Now please hear me when I say don’t take anything away from Bay Springs because they outplayed us and they played well and they are to be commended. But we have to use the old John Wooden philosophy. We have to take care of us and we have to get better.”
Bay Springs’ second touchdown of the game came on its first full possession. The PHS defense had the visiting Bulldogs in a fourth and 7 situation at the Tornadoes 35-yard line but Cole found Lee down the right sideline for a touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 16-8 with 5:29 left in the third.
The visitors picked up their third touchdown of the first half with 6:40 to play in the second quarter when 5-foot-9, 230-pound senior Jamarius Hosey broke free up the middle and raced for a 55-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was again good, putting the winners up 24-8 at the half.
Hosey finished the night with a game-high 161 rushing yards on 18 carries.
The first half took nearly an hour and a half to play, with 21 penalties being marked off between the two teams. The final total for the game was 30 combined penalties being accessed. PHS had 15 penalties for 110 yards, while Bay Springs had 15 for 125, but Philly’s seemed to be more costly — especially early in the game.
Bay Springs received the second-half kickoff and essentially put the game away with an impressive 13-play, 61-yard drive that culminated with Hosey’s 6-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs’ fourth two-point conversion of the game put the winners up 32-8 with 5:37 left in the third quarter.
Philly responded with a solid drive of its own that featured seven pass completions by junior quarterback Asher Morgan. The touchdown came on a 6-yard strike over the middle to Kadarius Calloway. The two-point conversion failed.
Morgan finished the night with 161 passing yards, hitting on 16-of-26 passes with two interceptions. Treyvin Crockett had eight catches for 71 yards to lead Philly, while Griffin had four receptions for 51 yards and Calloway three for 25.
Bay Springs added a fifth touchdown in the fourth quarter when Anson Windham scored on a 6-yard run with 6:47 left in the game.
Next up for the Tornadoes is a home match-up with cross-town rival Neshoba Central, which will come into the game with a 2-0 record. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
