Meridian native receives national recognition
Meteorologist/Algorithm Engineer Jamese D. Sims, Ph.D., has been recognized as Outstanding Team Member-Employee of the Quarter by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/National Environmental Satellite Date and Information Services (NESDIS) and Office of Satellite Ground Services (OSGS).
The Meridian native began her meteorology career through internships with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) while a student meteorology major at Jackson State University (JSU). According to Sims, experience obtained during those internships prepared her for a permanent position as a research meteorologist with NOAA upon graduation from JSU in 2004. She continued her educational quest at Howard University, Washington, D.C., where she received her doctorate in atmospheric sciences in fall 2009.
After 12 years as a meteorologist with the NOAA National Weather Service, Sims was selected to become a part of the NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) as a physical scientist to serve as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R (GOES-R) Series Algorithm Engineer. The GOES-R satellite launched successfully on Nov. 19, and Sims was selected as one of the panelist to explain and discuss the GOES-R Satellite for an audience of guests the day preceding the launch at Cape Canaveral, Fla.
Upon returning to her work station in Greenbelt, Md., Sims was honored with the Outstanding Team Member-Employee of the Quarter Award.
Sims is a 1999 graduate of Meridian High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James (Georgia) Sims Jr. of Meridian and the mother of Jordan McGlone of Bowie, Md.
