Courts warn of email scam

The Administrative Office of Courts for the State of Mississippi Judiciary is warning residents to be on the lookout for a scammers who are trying to get them to open an email attachment that could contain a virus.

An Administrative Office of Courts press release states scammers are sending emails with a subject line, “Notice to appear in court.”

“The scam emails are a ruse intended to persuade recipients to click on and open an attachment or a link that will cause the recipient’s computer to become infected with a computer virus,” a press release issued by the Administrative Office of Courts states.

Those who receive the emails are warned not to open an attachment or link in unsolicited email fitting this description. Opening the attachment may expose the user’s computer to malware or allow the spammer to collect sensitive information, the press release states.

The scam is one that has resurfaced for years throughout the country. Other variations reference nonexistent arrest warrants, or tell the recipient to send money.

If in doubt about the authenticity of email correspondence, independently look up a telephone number and call the court  named in the email, the press release states.
