Nick, Eddie Brown win Bill Davis tournament
In years past, the Bill Davis Northwood Invitational has usually seen Nick Brown and Jarrod Moulds partner together for the popular summer tournament.
This year, however, the two deviated from the norm as Brown teamed up with his father, Eddie Brown, while Moulds paired with Joe Tew.
The change resulted in Nick and Eddie Brown facing Moulds and Tew Tuesday morning in the championship bracket of the Nicklaus Flight.
The father-and-son duo combined to shoot 7-under to place first and win the championship. Nick Brown shot 6-under to spearhead the winning effort, which ended early with the Brown duo six up with four holes left to play.
“This is the first time that my dad and I have won this one, so it feels good,” Nick Brown, 28, said. “We played well today. Today, I played a little bit better, but he carried me the first day. Over four days, it’s a team effort.”
Although this year’s Bill Davis Invitational was the Browns’ first as a team, father and son used years of experience of playing together in the past to push them ahead Tuesday. Eddie Brown beamed when praising his son’s effort.
“He’s a very good player; I just kind of help out a little bit every now and then,” Eddie Brown, 64, said. “He played very well — he couldn’t have played much better today.”
After shooting a 63 in qualifying play Saturday and securing the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Nick and Eddie Brown established themselves as the early favorites, along with Moulds and Tew, who shot 64 in the qualifier.
As the tournament entered match play Sunday, the Browns drew Randy Pool and Jack Combest. Eddie Brown said his team’s No. 1 seeding heading into match play was no more than a short-lived bragging right, as match play presented a more arduous task.
“It’s match play — any team that shows up can beat us,” Eddie Brown said. “Of course, we felt like any team that showed up we could beat them. You just have to win each match each day. It doesn’t matter if you win by one up or 10 up, you just have to win that one match and go to the next day.”
The Browns staved off Pool and Combest to face Dole Bryan and Lee Thornton in the semifinals, who they defeated in a competitive contest Monday to reach the championship.
“We played well the qualifying day and (in) the first match, and then we kind of had our bad day yesterday,” Nick Brown said. “But we kind of figured out a way to win it. Somehow we grinded it out on 18. And then we had another good day today. So, usually, that’s the way these tournaments are. If you can find a way to win on your day off, then you’re good to go, and we finished strong today.”
The 2017 Bill Davis Northwood Invitational marked its 76th year.
“It’s great for us to be able to host these events,” Northwood Golf Pro Billy Pomeroy said. “These events bring everybody together and brings people who enjoy and love the game of golf and who love to compete together, and it’s great to be able to host and showcase. Our maintenance staff works really hard, and despite the rain, they’ve done a fabulous job of getting the course ready. We look forward to it every year, and we look forward to putting on a first-class tournament.”
