Newton board tables dispatch move

NEWTON — The City of Newton Board of Alderman on Tuesday tabled a proposal to move the city’s dispatching service to the county, after the city attorney said he needed to review the proposal before any decision could be made.

“If the board would allow, I need to review the contract to make sure whatever language if any needs to be changed,” city attorney Brian Mayo. “Whatever is decided, there will be a three-month window or more to get everything switched over.”

The proposal to move the service was made at last month’s board meeting by Newton County E-911 Director Brian Taylor. The switch would save the city about $48,000 a year, according to Mayor Murray Weems, who favors the move.

“There would be a lot of benefits that we would have we don’t have now with the city,” Weems said.

The proposal to move dispatch to the county has been up for discussion for several years, but no action has been taken to make the change.
