The Lady Jaguars from Wayne Academy took a 5-4 win over Newton County Academy to avenge a earlier loss to the Lady Generals and spoiling the home opener on the newly renovated Lady General field.

Lady Generals skipper Brooke Steele gave Wayne Academy credit for the come-from-behind win, but also laid some blame on her squad’s mental miscues.

“Careless errors and not having their heads in the game like not knowing how many outs there were in some innings didn’t help,” Steele said. “Wayne has a really good team, the type of team that makes you work for it to beat them and that’s the type of team you want to play.”

Wayne Academy coach Ricky Powell liked the way his team is coming together.

“We have the fastest outfield I’ve seen and we use that speed on the base paths to apply pressure,” Powell said.

Wayne Academy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Molly Doss drew a one-out walk and scored on a Taylor Pittman shot that was misplayed by Newton County Academy. Pittman crossed the plate when Hayley Revette ripped a two-out single and give Wayne Academy a two run lead after one half inning  

Newton County Academy narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom half of the first when Kellie Hollingsworth reached on a single and scored on a Taylor Evans single.

Both teams turned up the defense as Newton County Academy held Wayne Academy scoreless while plating three third inning runs.

Belle Hollingsworth reached on a one-out error, and moved around when Kellie Hollingsworth followed with a single. Cayden Alexander plated Belle Hollingsworth with an RBI single, and Kaliegh Cosgrove drove Kellie Hollingsworth with an RBI single to make the score 4-2 for Newton County Academy.

Wayne Academy took the win in the final inning when Pittman led off with a double, went to third on an Alyssa West hit and Kate McRee ripped a two-RBI single for the winning margin 

Revette,Pitman, West and Allen were big contributors for Wayne Academy, now 6-1 on the season. 

Belle and Kellie Hollingsworth along with Alexander and Cosgrove led the Lady Generals offensive charge and Cosgrove flashed the leather defensively for the 6-1-1 Newton County Academy squad. 

Newton County Academy opens district play when it travels to Clinton Christian Academy Tuesday, and Wayne Academy resumes action with an on-the-road tilt with Winston.
