Lady Tigers fall to Resurrection Catholic

Since Nov. 29, Southeast Lauderdale High School has only successfully played two contests.

The Lady Tigers had their Nov. 29 contest against Wayne County High School called off due to rain, and the same was the case last Monday for their game against Northeast Lauderdale High School.

Southeast Lauderdale (4-2) last played Dec. 1, a game that earned the Lady Tigers a 5-0 against the Mississippi School for Mathematics & Science.

Eager to be back on the soccer field, the Lady Tigers hosted Pascagoula’s Resurrection Christian School Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Southeast Lauderdale dropped a 3-1 contest to the Lady Eagles, moving their season record to 4-2.

Lady Tigers head coach Mike Thomas said the lull in play impacted his team, but he’s optimistic that more frequent play moving forward will put Southeast Lauderdale back on track.

“The last time we played was last Thursday,” Thomas said. “A big thing is continuity, and building on things — getting into a flow. We’ve tried to work ourselves into a flow, and we’re having a lot of stop-and-go because of the weather, and I think it’s affecting us to where we’re not having a good flow. But hopefully starting today, we’ll get consecutive games, and we’ll get to where we’ll need to be.”

Resurrection Catholic School eighth grader Hayley Cousins turned in a hat-trick, scoring all three of the Lady Eagles’ goals. Cousins scored her first goal of the contest 15:31 seconds into the first half to put Resurrection Catholic ahead 1-0.

Lady Tigers’ freshman Latavia Roberts tied the score at 1 27:58 into the opening period, powering her way into the goalie box, leaving a wake of Resurrection Catholic defenders.

“Latavia is our go-to person as far as offense is concerned,” Thomas said. “She gets a lot of touches up front, and she’s a person who can make it happen when we get it to her, and she’s who we try to get it to.”

Cousins booted her second goal of the game just 4:40 seconds into the final half, pushing Resurrection Catholic’s lead to 2-1, and tallied her third score of the day 35:25 into the second half.

Roberts said it was good to finally be able to be back on the soccer field with her teammates.

“We just motivate ourselves to push harder and harder,” she said. “The less you motivate yourself, you won’t win. Winning is about working as a team and pushing each other. There is no I in team; it’s us. We’re family, and family works together.”
