Prep baseball: Newton County beats NE Jones in extras

DECATUR — Gavin Bailey was just not having his best day. Then he redeemed himself.

Bailey had a walk-off single to center to lift Newton County past Northeast Jones 5-4 in 11 innings on Friday night.

“I’m just proud of the guys for fighting and persevering,” Newton County coach Wyatt Tullos said. “Gavin came through for us. He had struck out three times tonight, and had the timely hit.”

In the bottom of the 11th, Newton County had Christian Aycox, Eli Harrison and Josh Ethridge reach base via walks. With two outs, Bailey hit a fastball right back up the middle for the walk-off.

Bailey also had a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that tied the game up at 4 for the Cougars.

“These guys never quit,” Tullos said. “Our pitchers were phenomenal tonight and got us out of big jams.”

Christian Aycox (2-2) got the win on the mound in relief for Newton County. He also had two hits, including a double, for the Cougars (9-5, 2-2). Aycox lasted three innings, gave up one hit and struck out five.

Cougars starter Alec Ivey went eight innings, scattering four hits, four earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts.

“Our division is the SEC West of baseball in 4A,” Tullos said. “I told the guys we got six more of these games, so we need to keep the momentum going.”

Tanner Fenton and Keagan Ward had two hits each to lead Northeast Jones (7-6, 3-1). Tyler Landrum (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Tigers.

“It came down to who would either make a mistake or get a timely hit, and they got it,” Northeast Jones coach Jeremy Parker said. “It was a great baseball game. Both teams laid it all out, and we will bounce back.”
