Book sale and celebrations mark library week in Meridian

National Library Week arrives next week and residents of Lauderdale County will have an opportunity to rediscover the wonder of books and the libraries that carry them.

The Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library’s annual sale is scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday on the second floor of the library, said Walt Barrett, the library’s assistant director.

“Having the sale inside allows for more space, plus it’s air-conditioned, we don’t have to worry about the weather and it’s much safer than having it on the street,” Walt Barrett, the library’s assistant director, said. “The main thing is, we have more books inside than we could have down there.

“We have so many selections of books that include non-fiction, cookbooks, popular fiction, and literature type books.

Prices are: hardbacks $2; trade paperbacks $1; paperbacks 50 cents; DVD and VHS $1; Audio books $1; encyclopedia set $5; magazines free. A bag of books on sale Saturday is $2. Library Surplus items are marked and include vintage desks, card catalogs, used computers and other items.

Barrett said proceeds from the sale go to Friends of the Library.

“The Friends group assists the library when the library needs help with funding,” Barrett said. “Our group has purchased a new phone system, security system and microfilm reader. They also help with Summer Reading programs.”

Also for National Library Week, there will be a book fine amnesty during the week. No fines will be charged. Patrons must visit the circulation department and ask for fees to be waived. This does not apply to damage or lost books.

Other events during the week will include a celebration day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. There will be games, free popcorn, hotdogs and drinks for 50 cents.

“We want people to come out and observe National Library Week with us because it’s important for people to recognize that we are here and here for them,” Emma Boyd, public services supervisor, said. “We are in the community and we want them to come and see what all we have to offer them.”

The library is located at 26th Avenue and Seventh Street across from Webb Funeral Home and is open from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For additional information call 601-693-6771.
