OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK
Did you know?
The goeduck clam is a west American clam that is larger than any other except the giant clam of the East Indies. The goeduck lives along the Pacific Coast from Puget Sound to San Diego. Its shell grows about 6 inches long, and the clam itself can weigh about six pounds.
Beginner’s corner
When buying shotgun shells for doves, consider the size of the shot carefully. Full choke guns shoot heavier shot well considering your pattern (like number 7 and a half). More open chokes, like IC (Improved Cylinder) need smaller shot to fill out the pattern ( like number 8 or 9). High flying birds require the heavier shot. Close in doves, like around watering sites, fall to the smaller shot well.
Tip of the week
Often a day of dove shooting is hard on your shoulder. Try shooting off both shoulders to half the shoulder abuse. Keep both eyes open and swing with the bird and you may discover this trick that can be useful for other game, like wild turkeys for instance.
