David O’Steen, organist-choirmaster at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Jackson, and the Metro Jackson ensemble Capital Brass will perform at the Thursday, Feb. 14, presentation of the St. Paul’s Music Series.

The afternoon program of music for organ and brass will begin at 12:05 p.m. at St. Paul Episcopal Church. The presentation will also be a re-dedicatory recital for the church’s newly renovated and enlarged Aeolian-Skinner organ, which was installed at the downtown Meridian church in 1953, according to David Benson, organist-choirmaster at St. Paul. In later years, the organ began showing signs of deterioration and the parish decided to retain the original pipework as well as part of the original console.

“The new pipework is in the rear of the nave and not only provides a variety of sound but has improved congregational singing,” Benson said.

O’Steen received his bachelor of music degree in piano performance with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was elected into the Alpha Zeta chapter of the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda and winner of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association’s Piano Concerto Competition. He received his master of music degree in piano performance from the University of Alabama. His teachers include Claude Cook, Paul Andersen, Warren Hutton, George Imbragulio, Mary Ann Stringer, Amanda Penick, Alfred Anderson and Edward White.

O’Steen has served as dean, sub-dean, and treasurer for AGO chapters in Mississippi, Alabama and North Carolina. As director of the Carolina Catholic Chorale, he led two choir tours of Italy, which included singing two masses in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, one of them a Papal Mass (a rare honor). He has also served as organist for two choir tours in England, the most recent a residency at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Barrington, Illinois, under the direction of Marjorie Johnston.

In addition to his duties at Jackson’s St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, O’Steen also is a private instructor of voice. He is currently president of the Board of Directors for the Jackson Choral Society and on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Conference on Church Music and Liturgy. He has served on the Leadership Program for Musicians National Board and the Diocesan Music and Liturgy Committee for the Diocese of Mississippi.

O’Steen will be accompanied by the quintet Capital Brass. Founded in 1981, Capital Brass fosters the appreciation of brass chamber music through performances that are educational and entertaining. The ensemble brings to life a diverse repertoire encompassing music from Renaissance to modern jazz and beyond, including works recently composed specifically for Capital Brass. All six players are professional musicians and educators and members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. In addition to concerts, Capital Brass gives school informances and master classes, and provides music for ceremonies and celebrations.

To the standard quintet instrumentation of two trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba, percussion is a natural complement and adds to the group’s versatility. In certain pieces, alphorn, euphonium, cornets, flugelhorns and piccolo trumpets also provide dramatic and intriguing changes in timbre. The result is performances which appeal to and enlighten listeners of all ages and musical tastes.

Capital Brass members are Robert Cheesman and Wayne Linehan, trumpets; Mimi Draut Linehan, horn; Ken Lyon, trombone; Wade Rackley, tuba; and Sherwood “Bud” Berthold, timpani.
