Chris Stapleton previews the first of two new albums coming this year

A man of few words, Chris Stapleton let his music do the talking during a listening event April 5 in Nashville for his new album, “From A Room: Volume. 1”.

But, he did drop a bit of bombshell news for his fans. In addition to the nine-track album he shared at the party, and which will be released May 5, Stapleton announced that a companion second volume would be out in December.

The “A Room” of the title is Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A, where Stapleton cut both upcoming albums (as well as the double-platinum, Traveller), and where the listening party was held.

“We camped out in here for a couple of months and had fun recording things,” he told attendees at the party, which included friends, music industry supporters, and wife Morgane. Among the legendary artists who have previously recorded in that studio include Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Dolly Parton.

The first nine songs were a familiar mix of Stapleton’s rockers, swampy blues tunes and stone-cold country songs. Included is a song previously cut by Willie Nelson in 1982, “Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning.” Another album track, “Second One To Know,” was debuted by Stapleton on the April 2 “52nd Academy of Country Music Awards.” But the album’s standout ballad, “Either Way,” silenced all the chatter in the room as Stapleton’s breathtaking vocals soared. Written by Stapleton, and previously recorded by Lee Ann Womack for her 2008 Call Me Crazy album, “Either Way” has been chosen as the project’s first radio single.
