SLOW-PITCH ROUNDUPS: Amory eliminates Choctaw Central; Newton County and Neshoba Central advance
Choctaw Central saw its season come to an end in the second round of the MHSAA Class II postseason Tuesday, as the Lady Warriors fell in two games to Amory, 13-2 and 17-5.
In Game 1, Tia’Rain Saunders had Choctaw Central’s only multiple hits, as she went 2-for-2 and drove in both of her team’s runs via a home run. Melanian Jimmie, Leia Phillips and Kenaye Willis all hit doubles.
In the second game, Willis went 2-for-2 with a double, and Ciji Vaughn also doubled. Maiya Joe finished 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, and Lakylee Martin was also 2-for-2.
Choctaw Central finished its season with a 10-7 record.
NESHOBA SWEEPS
The Lady Rockets continued to dominate in the Class III playoffs, securing wins of 15-0 and 16-1 at Greenville Tuesday.
Tenley Grisham was 2-for-2 with a walk in Game 1, as was Hamaya Fielder and Tanna McClelland. McClelland also had a triple. Kylee Thompson went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, Elleigh Willis finished 2-for-2, and Tori Henderson went 2-for-3 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs. Hailey Billie was also 3-for-3 with three home runs. Jayda Ben had a double for the Lady Rockets as well.
Both games were over after three innings due to the mercy rule. Willis pitched a combined six innings in both games, surrendering just one run. She gave up just one run on four hits in between the two games with four total strikeouts.
NEWTON COUNTY TOPS FLORENCE
Newton County defeated Florence in two games Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Class II playoffs.
The Lady Cougars won Game 1, 14-1. Lorren Ivey was 3-for-3 with a home run, and Brittany Thomas finished 2-for-3 with a home run. Lanie Phillips and Katelyn Gipson also hit home runs for Newton County. Landree Amis finished 3-for-3 with a triple, and Thomas and Casey Dube also doubled. Natalie Lampton and Gipson combined to pitch five innings one one-run ball.
In Game 2, Newton County came away with a 21-2 victory. Thomas, Shelby Anderson and Katelyn Jackson all had two hits, but most of the starters only got two at-bats before they began getting subbed out. Anderson, Gipson, Lizzy Hollingsworth, Lampton and Thomas all doubled, Anderson and Mandarie Leach tripled and Thomas also hit a home run.
Lampton pitched five innings in Game 2, giving up two unearned runs.
