ENTERPRISE — Enterprise senior Derrick Moore was a little slow heading to the sideline during the third quarter of his team’s contest Friday night, but after scoring his fourth touchdown of the game, he was understandably a bit fatigued.
Moore, a running back and free safety, accounted for four touchdowns to help push Enterprise to its fifth win of the season, as it coasted to a 48-14 win in a contest where it never surrendered the lead.
“He’s a special player, and he plays tremendously hard,” Enterprise (5-2) head coach Kelly Jimmerson said of Moore. “But, the whole picture is his offensive line. And he’ll tell you if we’re not good up front, he’s not good. But he’s a tremendous player, and can change a game for us with the help of the other 10 guys.”
It didn’t take long for Moore to find the end zone.
On second-and-7 from Clarkdale (2-5) territory, he raced 32 yards to open the night’s scoring with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter to give Enterprise a 6-0 lead after its 2-point conversion fell flat.
“I knew that we had to get this win because last week we didn’t have the best game,” said Moore, who rushed for 117 yards on 11 carries. “We had to do what coach said and get it done, and we did our best. I just did my job, and everything that I had to do to the best of my ability.”
With just under 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Enterprise running back Chris Milsap took a handoff from quarterback Dalton Baxley, blasted through the heart of the Clarkdale defense and scampered 43 yards for the touchdown. Milsap’s touchdown capped a five-play drive that spanned 73 yards. Moore added a 2-point conversion to give Enterprise a 14-0 lead.
Enterprise defensive back Caleb Snider picked off Clarkdale quarterback Landon Gibson on fourth-and-5 in the red zone, giving him his first official interception of the contest after he had one overturned due to an Enterprise penalty.
Senior running back Lane Kennedy victimized Clarkdale’s defense on the ensuing drive.
After tallying 25 yards on two carries in the drive, Kennedy darted 44 yards into the end zone to push the lead to 20-0. Clarkdale’s Stephen Bickford blocked Enterprise’s extra-point attempt.
“It’s rivalry week, and I love playing Clarkdale,” Kennedy, who finished with 106 rushing yards on eight carries, said. “I have the mentality of not letting (defenses) take me down. The blocking was great, and everybody was pumped up. It’s a hometown rival and they’re right down the road from us. The win means a lot to us.”
Defensive end Cameron Keith recovered a Clarkdale fumble in Clarkdale territory for Enterprise’s third turnover of the first half. On Enterprise’s ensuing possession, Baxley found Moore for a 20-yard pass which gave Enterprise first-and-goal from Clarkdale’s 1-yard line. One play later, Moore crossed the plane to add his second touchdown of the first half, which gave Enterprise a 26-0 advantage with 2:08 remaining before intermission.
“We made too many mistakes early in the game that got us in a hole that was too big to climb out of,” Clarkdale head coach Wes Roy said. “Then, they took over on the line of scrimmage and were more physical than us. At the end of the day, I have to do a better job of getting them ready to play. We have to regroup and bounce back next week. We still have four big district games left.”
Wing back Tyler Roberts gave Clarkdale its first touchdown of the game on Clarkdale’s first possession of the second half with a 20-yard run that completed a nine-play drive. A missed 2-point conversion trimmed Enterprise’s lead to 26-6 in the third quarter.
Moore recorded his third touchdown of the game courtesy of a 38-yard run in the third quarter, and Moore added to his cause with a 2-point conversion run to make the score 34-6. Moore hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Baxley on his team’s next possession, which put the score at 41-6 following the extra-point kick.
Running back Zach Kyle scored from 25 yards out to give Enterprise a 48-6 lead after the extra point in the fourth quarter.
Clarkdale capped the game’s scoring with a rushing touchdown from Germarcus Brown and the 2-point conversion late in the fourth to make the score 48-14.
“We got a much better effort than we’ve been getting,” Jimmerson said of the win. “Hopefully we’re over the hump this week. Our kids came out, they played hard and they played with passion that we haven’t seen in the past couple of weeks. If we continue this, I like our chances throughout the rest of the year.”
