The Lions scored via an interception return, a blocked punt, a rushing touchdown, passing touchdown and a safety. They led 47-6 at halftime and coasted through the second half to secure the 54-13 victory and improve to 4-0 on the season.
In the first quarter, Shavoke Herrington picked off an errant pass and took it back 62 yards for the score. Soon after, Adrain Miller returned a blocked punt for six more and the Lions led 17-0 after the first despite possessing the ball on offense just twice.
The Lions played two quarterbacks like they have done most of the season. Vijay Miller and Messiah DeWeaver combined to complete 24 of 34 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. In fac,t they both completed 12 passes.
Seven of those passes went to Dontario Drummond for 100 yards and a touchdown. In total, the Lion signal callers completed passes to 10 different receivers.
“Our quarterbacks have to execute better and we are trying to find out which one does his job better,” head coach Buddy Stephens said. “We have to work, execute and practice hard if we want to win in Decatur next week.”
Mississippi Delta was able to move the ball on a few big plays in the game. Stephens was quick to note that he wasn’t to excited about how the game started.
“We give up to many big plays and had some mistakes with penalties,” he said. “We were a little sloppy, but we have to find out how to get our team ready from the get go.”
On the ground, EMCC produced 149 yards on 23 carries and averaged almost 5 yards per rush. Keon Moore led rushers with 59 yards on five carries.
The No. 1 Ranked Lions will go to East Cental Community College next week in Decatur. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
