Lauderdale County Emergency Management is opening a warming shelter as dangerously cold temperatures are expected to move into the region early next week.

The National Weather Service in Jackson is forecasting low temperatures of 10-15 degrees, with daily highs remaining below freezing. Wind chills could reach as cold as -10 degrees.

LEMA Director Odie Barrett said a warming shelter will be open at the Mt. Barton Auditorium, 2900 St. Paul Street, from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday for those needing a place to get out of the cold. Soup, coffee and hot chocolate will also be available to help residents warm up.

“This warming center is open to anyone,” he said.

Barrett said the shelter will not be a come-and-go style facility. While at the warming shelter, no smoking, drinking or drug use will be allowed, he said. Local law enforcement will be on hand during the shelter hours.
