Rebecca Ward was shot five times after two suspects approached her at her car in the Dollar Tree parking lot and demanded her purse, according to the GoFundMe description. Her two-year-old child, who was in the back seat at the time, was not hurt.

Ward was treated at a local hospital and later taken to Jackson for further care.

Meridian Police Chief Deborah Naylor Young issued a statement on the incident shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday. In it, she said investigators believe the incident was isolated and not connected to the business.

“Based on the information received thus far, we have determined this was an isolated incident. There was no threat intended towards the business,” Young said in the written statement. “We encourage anyone who may have seen anything related to this incident to contact the Meridian Police Department or Crime stoppers at 855-485-8477 for the apprehension of the suspect or suspects.”

Ike Kiefer, president of the North Lauderdale Water Association, who set up the fundraiser, said Ward’s husband has been a longtime NLWA employee, and the water association wanted to do something to help the family in its time of need.

“We know medical bills and time lost from work are going to be another heavy blow to this family,” Kiefer wrote in the fundraiser description. “The Water Association and the families are rallying to the cause, but we invite you to help as well, if you are so moved.”

As of Thursday, the fundraiser had reached $8,905 of its $10,000 goal. To donate, visit gofundme.com/f/rebecca-king-ward
