A suspect sought in connection with the Monday murders of a Toomsuba family was arrested Tuesday.

Karon Deshawn McVay, 44, of Cuba, Ala., was charged following an interview with investigators from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’ Office, said Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.

McVay voluntarily accompanied investigators to their office for an interview and, in the course of the interview, was arrested for the murders of Edna Durr, 65; her daughters Kiearra Durr, 27, and Tomecca L. Pickett, 42; and Pickett’s son, 5-year-old Owen Pickett, Calhoun said.

McVay faces three counts of murder, one count of capital murder and a felon in possession of a firearm charge.

Calhoun said the capital murder charge was for Owen Pickett.

McVay had a relationship with Tomecca Pickett but is not related to Owen Pickett, according to Calhoun.

“It would be accurate to describe this as a domestic violence situation,” Calhoun said.

Calhoun said investigators believed others may have known about or assisted McVay in the quadruple homicide.

“We would recommend those individuals come see us before we come see you,” Calhoun said.

Calhoun credited community members who stepped forward and provided investigators with information that lead to arrest at 11 p.m. Tuesday, less than 15 hours after the discovery of the crime.

McVay, in custody at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, had a scheduled preliminary hearing Wednesday morning to review the charges and evidence against him.

A deputy discovered the four family members shot in the Toomsuba home, located on 4019 Butts Road, during a welfare check Tuesday morning.

The deputy also found Kiearra Durr’s 3-year-old child, uninjured, and an ambulance transported the child to a hospital for a wellness check Tuesday.

Calhoun reported Wednesday that the child had been released from the hospital and turned over to family.

Bond has been set at a total of $3,050,000.
