Meridian Mayor Jimmie Smith was involved in a car wreck Wednesday morning near the intersection of 34th Street and 12th Avenue.

Photos posted to social media showed a black SUV with the city’s seal being loaded onto a wrecker truck.

Communications Director Ida Brown confirmed the mayor was involved in the incident and both Smith and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital by private vehicles.

Smith was back at work Wednesday afternoon after passing a post-accident drug screening as required by city employee guidelines, Brown said.

Meridian Police Department is investigating the crash.
