The historical significance of Meridian’s Carnegie Library for Blacks was recognized with the unveiling of a marker at the corner of 13th Street and 28th Avenue on Saturday. On hand for the ceremony were Catherine Jones, Josephine Hughes, Eli Alexander, The Rev. Eugene Boger of Saint Paul United Methodist Church, Meridian Mayor Percy Bland and other community members. The single story brick building opened in 1913 as the first library for African Americans in Lauderdale County. It closed in 1974 and was torn down in 2008.
