After 1,189 days in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility, Leroy Lewis was released on Thursday after pleading guilty to simple assault on a correctional officer.
The plea came after a jury on Wednesday acquitted Lewis in the Dec. 15, 2014 murder of Reondricus Rogers, who died following a gunshot wound to the chest. The jury also acquitted Lewis of the aggravated assault of Kaddaifi Gray, which happened the same day.
However, Lewis faced a charge for an assault on a correctional officer while he was being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.
Lewis pleaded guilty to the assault and has been released for time served, according to Ward Calhoun, the chief deputy of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department.
Mark Chandlee, Lewis’ public defender, could not be reached to confirm the details of the plea deal.
Calhoun said Lewis would likely pay a fine, which Mississippi Code caps at $1,000. The maximum sentence of imprisonment is 5 years and Lewis served more than three years in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.
Lewis still has a complaint filed in the federal court for the lengthy delay in his case in the Southern District Court, in Jackson, with Judge Carlton Reeves.
Reeves hasn’t yet issued a ruling, but the case may be dismissed since Lewis had his trial and has been released.
